| Shell Firing and published articles
Shell-firing is a very ancient technique , I have seen evidence of it on early
Bizen Works..it is used extensively in Japan in a variety of different ways in
achieving natural effects and also in glazed work.. (mainly to balance work at
different angles to achieve induced runs).
Bizen Masters often fire in saggars when using shells ..Shigaraki
Masters particularly use large shells on large vases and plates
to obtain their Keshki (landscape effects) while also utilizing smaller shells
on the inside of Sake Cups for example to obtain a flash which is slightly
different to a wood-ash flash.
Almost all types of shells will flash and the amount of flash
will vary according to the particular type of shell...I have published two
comprehensive articles in CM on this technique and the way I have developed it.
Its is an extremely simple technique to experiment with in
either a Gas or Electric kiln..
There are not significant amounts of salt emitted during the
firings which would cause concerns over damage to elements or fibre..
I have published a number of articles on this
technique
